Necessity of Cluster Transport Node Profile (TNP) Transition for VCF 9 / 9.1 NSX Import and Convergence

Issue/Introduction

This article clarifies whether an existing NSX environment must be transitioned to Cluster Transport Node Profiles (TNPs) prior to importing or converging into VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0 / 9.1.

Environment

VMware NSX 4.x

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 / 9.1

Cause

When planning an import or upgrade of NSX 4.x to VCF 9 / 9.1, administrators need to confirm if hosts configured individually (without an NSX Cluster TNP) block the VCF workflow, or if applying a Cluster TNP is a mandatory prerequisite before initiating the import.

Resolution

Transitioning individually configured NSX hosts to a Cluster Transport Node Profile (TNP) is not mandatory for the VCF 9 / 9.1 import or convergence workflow.

 - Existing host-based setups can be imported into the VCF 9.1 environment exactly as they are configured currently.

 - Moving ESXi hosts to a Cluster TNP configuration before initiating the import/convergence workflow is not required.

 

Note: While host-based configurations remain supported for the import, always review the specific VCF 9.1 Release Notes and Product Interoperability Matrix for any environmental or scale-specific recommendations during your final planning phase.
