Configure for Edge Upgrade and NSX Finalization Greyed Out During Domain Upgrade

Issue/Introduction

During a VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) workload domain upgrade, Configure for VMware NSX Edge Cluster Upgrade and NSX Upgrade Finalize options are greyed out in the VCF Operations console. This issue typically occurs because NSX Edge component details are missing from the SDDC Manager's Platform database, often due to Edge nodes being deployed directly on NSX (out-of-band) rather than through SDDC Manager.

Environment

• VMware Cloud Foundation 9.x
• VMware Cloud Foundation Operations(VCFOPS) 9.x

Cause

The VCF Operations Platform database lacks current Edge inventory data and reflects a stale NSX-T version. This database desynchronization prevents the lifecycle management workflow from validating the management plane upgrade state and enabling the Edge finalization workflow.

Resolution

1. Perform an Inventory Sync for the workload domain from VCF Operations, specifically selecting the Edge sync option to populate the Edges in the Platform DB, following document: Manage VCF Domain Configuration Drift
2. Log in directly to the NSX Manager UI for the Impacted Domain.
3. Acknowledge any pending pre-checks blocking the upgrade (e.g., legacy NSX-V migration warnings).
4. Before proceeding with the manual upgrade, navigate to System > Lifecycle Management > Backup & Restore. Verify that a valid SFTP target is configured and initiate a manual backup. Wait until the backup status reports as Successful before proceeding.
5. Return to the System > Lifecycle Management > Upgrade interface of NSX Manager. Proceed to the Edge Clusters component phase and initiate the upgrade for the impacted Edge cluster. Monitor the process until the Edge nodes successfully complete their upgrade to the target version.
6. Once the Edge node upgrade is finished, click the Next Button to Finalize within the NSX Manager UI to officially commit and close out the NSX upgrade sequence.
7. Synchronize the NSX-T version in the VCF Operations Platform DB to reflect the newly upgraded version by following the procedure outlined in KB: Synchronize inventory versions.
