Issue/Introduction

During a brownfield upgrade to VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1, your existing environment may have management components deployed on NSX VLAN-backed segments. You need to determine if this remains a supported configuration for:

  • VCF Operations
  • VCF Automation
  • VMSP Management Runtime Service cluster

Environment

VCF Operations 9.1

Cause

VCF 9.1 design documentation and validated reference architectures focus primarily on Greenfield deployments, which prescribe NSX Overlay Segments for management component isolation. Brownfield upgrade paths often retain legacy networking topologies that vary from the default Greenfield specification.

Resolution

Hosting VCF Operations, VCF Automation, and other VCF Management Runtime Cluster components on NSX VLAN-backed segments remains a fully supported network configuration following a brownfield upgrade to VCF 9.1.

While greenfield deployment models recommend migrating management components to an NSX Overlay Segment for alignment with the standard architecture, migration of existing brownfield workloads from validated NSX VLAN segments is not required to maintain system support status.
