Issue/Introduction

In the NSX Manager, the NSX Configuration status of an ESXi host undergoing NSX installation is stuck at 0% Preparing ... and remains on the task Preparing Installation.

The following error may be seen:

One or more transport node(s) realization failed while creating the transport node connection with profile on compute collection through NSX Manager

Configuration tasks such as creation of VMkernels or installation of NSX software (VIBs) may have stopped in an incomplete state. As a result, manual attempts to remove NSX components using the NSX CLI may fail.

Resolution

Reboot the affected ESXi host.

This reboot can clear error conditions and allow installation to be re-attempted. The installation can then be started using the "Configure NSX" action or by removing it from an NSX-configured cluster and re-adding it.

Additional Information

Refer to article ESXi Host NSX Preparation Stuck at "Enabling Host Status in Controller" which addresses a similar issue where host preparation is stuck at at 68% or 80% Enabling Host Status in Controller.

The solutions recommended in the knowledge base article linked above are:

  • host resyncs (triggered by an ESXi host reboot)
  • NSX Manager reboots
  • entering and exiting Maintenance Mode, and
  • uninstallation and reinstallation of NSX host components.

The knowledge base articles NSX Host Preparation Fails due to Compute Manager being in a disconnected state and NSX installation is failing on the host with an error 'vLCM remediation initiated' cover other causes of host component installation failure.
