Issue/Introduction

  • During a patch upgrade from VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1.0.0 to 9.1.0.0100, two Log Management components are observed under VCF Management page in VCF Operations. Both components report a status of "Ready for upgrade" and display successful precheck results.
  • The components show the following distinct upgrade paths:

    Active Component: 9.1.0.0.25346055 -> 9.1.0.0100.25435121
    Residual Component: undefined -> 9.1.0.0.25346055

  • The current operational Log Management component is on version 9.1.0.0.25346055.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1.0

Cause

The Log Management component showing the upgrade path of undefined -> 9.1.0.0.25346055 is a residual artifact remaining from a previous upgrade (i.e. 9.0.2 to 9.1.0.0). This is a cosmetic issue within the VCF Operations UI and does not interfere with the actual patching process of the active Log Management component.

Resolution

The Log Management component can be patched following below steps:

  1. Validate that the  active Log Management component(with upgrade path "9.1.0.0.25346055 -> 9.1.0.0100.25435121" in this case) displays a "Ready for upgrade" status and that its prechecks have passed.
  2. Proceed with the upgrade to version 9.1.0.0100 directly on the active component. The residual 9.0.2 Log Management component can be ignored.
  3. If the upgrade explicitly fails due to the residual Log Management component, follow Failed component cleanup during VCF 9.1 installation or upgrade and execute cleanup_component.py as mentioned in the KB to remove the residual Log Management record.
