Issue/Introduction

During active VMware HCX migration cycles, multiple migration tasks fail to progress and eventually time out. This behavior correlates with the source or destination VMware vCenter Server instance entering an unresponsive or disconnected state.

Symptoms include:

  • HCX dashboard displays migration status as failed or stuck.

  • vSphere Client loses connectivity to the vCenter Server.

Environment

  • VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF)

  • VMware HCX

  • VMware vCenter Server

Cause

Temporary unresponsiveness or resource contention within the vCenter Server inventory service breaks the active synchronization session required by the HCX management plane, leaving migration tasks in an unresolvable or locked state.

Resolution

To resolve the stuck tasks and successfully clear the migration queue, a manual force cleanup must be executed before restarting the migration sequence.

  1. Log into the HCX Management Portal.

  2. Navigate to the Services tab and select Migration.

  3. Locate the specific stalled or failed migration task tracking records.

  4. Select the affected virtual machine row(s).

  5. Click on the Action menu and select Force Cleanup.

  6. Acknowledge the warnings and allow the inventory provider layer to purge the stale orchestration states on the vCenter Server inventory. Do not select the option to remove the seed checkpoint.

  7. Once the task status updates to a cleared state, select the virtual machine and initiate the migration wizard again to retry the operation.
