Error: "Node type 'WITNESS' is not resizable" received when trying to scale VCF Operations CA cluster

Issue/Introduction

• Attempting to scale up a VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Operations Continuous Availability (CA) cluster fails.

• The failure occurs when initiating a scale-up operation—either increasing the node size (CPU and memory) or adding additional storage to analytics nodes—from the following UI path: Build > Lifecycle > Components > Operations.

• Upon clicking Finish, the task fails and returns the following error message:

  Error: Node type 'WITNESS' is not resizable

Environment

VCF Operations 9.1

Cause

This occurs because the scale-up workflow inadvertently attempts to apply the scaling parameters to the cluster's witness node, which does not support resizing. This is a known issue in version 9.1 and is currently being fixed.

Resolution

This is a known issue and Broadcom Engineering is working to get this fixed in a future release.

 

To resize an Aria Operations, follow the steps below.

1. Log in to Aria Operations admin UI as the local admin user.

Example: https://IP_or_FQDN/admin

Note: Replace IP_or_FQDN with the actual IP or FQDN of Aria Operations UI.

2. Click Take Offline under Cluster Status.

Note: Wait for Cluster Status to show as Offline.

3. As an administrator, navigate to the node you want to scale up in the vSphere Web UI.
4. Right-Click on the node and select Power > Shut Down Guest OS.
5. Once the node is powered off, ensure the Virtual Hardware version is upgraded to the latest version:

• Right-Click the node and click Compatibility > Upgrade VM Compatibility.
• Read the warning and click Yes.
• In the Compatible with box, select the desired compatibility level and click OK.

6. Right-click on the node and select Edit Settings.
7. Edit the CPU and/or Memory to the desired level, based on the VMware Cloud Foundation Operations Sizing Guidelines.

Note: To add disk space, follow steps 4-11 in How to add disks to a node in Aria Operations cluster.

8. Click OK.
9. If the node selected in step 3 was an Analytic node, repeat steps 4-8 on all other Analytic nodes so their resources match.
10. Right-click the node(s) and select Power > Power On.
11. Once all nodes have powered back on, navigate back to the Aria Operations admin UI (https://IP_or_FQDN/admin) as the local admin user.
12. Click Bring Online under Cluster Status.

Note: Wait for the Cluster Status to show as Online.
