Issue/Introduction

  • During the pre-check validation phase, the Upgrade Coordinator reported failures for multiple ESXi hosts with the below error:

"Invalid upgrade group configuration. Upgrade order cannot be parallel in group"Group X for ESXI" since it has hosts from a VSAN cluster"

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

  • The Upgrade Coordinator was configured to perform parallel host upgrades.
  • Parallel upgrades are unsupported for vSAN clusters because vSAN requires serial host evacuation (placing hosts into Maintenance Mode one at a time) to maintain data availability and adhere to vSAN health constraints.

Resolution

To resolve the pre-check failures and safely proceed with the upgrade, follow the below step:

  1. Modify the host upgrade groups in the Upgrade Coordinator. Change the upgrade sequence from parallel to serial to correspond with the vCenter vSAN cluster configuration. This ensures vMotion and Maintenance Mode operations align with vSAN data availability constraints.
  2. Re-run the pre-checks again for the host section > check upgrade readiness > pre-check >select Host only.
  3. Once all pre-checks pass successfully and the environment is structurally ready, proceed with the upgrade execution independently during your scheduled customer-driven maintenance window.
