VCF Operations for Networks Upgrade from 6.14.2 -> 9.0.2 Fails with "HBase or HDFS is unhealthy" - Error Code: LCMVRNICONFIG90128

Issue/Introduction

When attempting to upgrade VCF Operations for Networks (formerly vRealize Network Insight) from version 6.14.2, the process halts at the "Upgrade PreCheck Status" stage. The system returns the following error:

com.vmware.vrealize.lcm.plugin.core.vrni.common.exception.VRNIUpgradeCheckStatusException: Error occurred while checking upgrade pre-check status with IP <node_ip> Pre-check message : { "msg" : "HBase or HDFS is unhealthy.", "type" : "INFO", "status" : "FAIL", "id" : "HBaseHdfsHealthCheckTask", ... }

This error occurs even when the underlying HDFS/HBase services report as healthy and disk space is sufficient.

VMware VCF Operations for Networks 6.14.x

Cause

This issue is caused by an unsupported upgrade path. Attempting to upgrade directly from version 6.14.2 to 9.0.2 is not a supported path. The upgrade process triggers a pre-check failure due to version incompatibility, even if the HDFS/HBase services are technically operational.

 

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must perform the upgrade to version 9.1.0.

Prerequisites

• Ensure you have taken a snapshot of the vCenter Server and VCF Operations for Networks nodes.
• Verify that you have sufficient disk space and that no HDFS corruption exists.

Upgrade Steps

This upgrade must be performed via the Lifecycle Manager in VCF Operations.
Note: Upgrading from 6.14.2 directly to 9.1.0 is blocked when using the standalone vRNI/AON user interface. You must initiate and manage this upgrade through the Lifecycle Manager suite.

The only option to upgrade to 6.14.2 to 9.1.0.

9.0.0: June 17, 2025
9.0.1.0: Sept. 29, 2025
9.0.2.0: Jan. 20, 2026
9.1.0 is the latest release after 6.14.2
