Issue/Introduction

When attempting to reconfigure a protected virtual machine to change its target datastore in vSphere Replication (8.x or 9.x), the reconfiguration wizard displays the following warning:

"Existing replica disk might not be compliant with the new storage policy. Virtual machine may recover with warnings."

The user may be unable to proceed without acknowledging this prompt, or may fear the replication will become unhealthy.

Environment

  • vCenter Server: 8.0.x / 7.0.x
  • vSphere Replication: 8.x / 9.x
  • VMware Live Recovery (Site Recovery)

Cause

This is a proactive, non-blocking administrative notification. It occurs because vSphere Replication detects a discrepancy between the capabilities of the selected target datastore (or the existing seed disks) and the rules defined in the VM's assigned Storage Policy.

Because the replica disk is not yet "active," it cannot always be automatically remediated to match the policy rules until a recovery operation (Test or Disaster Recovery) is performed.

Resolution

The warning is safe to acknowledge and does not impact replication health.

In the vSphere Replication Reconfigure Replication wizard

1. In the Reconfigure Replication wizard, acknowledge the warning prompt.

2. Click Next and complete the wizard.

3. Verify the replication state returns to OK or Healthy.

Post-Recovery Remediation

If the VM remains "Non-Compliant" after a recovery operation:

1. Locate the recovered VM in the vSphere Client.

2. Navigate to VM Policies> Check Storage Policy Compliance.

3. If still non-compliant, select Reapply VM Storage Policy.
