VMware Cloud Director 10.6.x and HCX 9.x Compatibility and Migration Options

Products

• VMware HCX

Issue/Introduction

• VMware Cloud Director (VCD) 10.6.x integration and compatibility with VMware HCX 9.x.
• Clarification for supported migration topologies between VCD 10.6.x (backed by vCenter Server 8.0 U3) and VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1 environments.

Environment

Source Environment: VCD : 10.6.x + vCenter 8.x + HCX : 9.1
Target/Destination Environment: VCF 9.1

Cause

VMware HCX 9.x and later versions do not support direct integration with VMware Cloud Director (VCD) instances.

Resolution

To perform migrations involving VCD 10.6.x, utilize one of the following supported alternative topologies:

Scenario 1: Migrations from VCD 10.6.x (backed by vCenter Server 8.x) to vCenter Server 9.x

• Deploy VMware HCX 9.x on both the source and destination environments.
• Register VMware HCX 9.x directly to the underlying vCenter Server 8.x instance, bypassing VCD.
• Migrate virtual machines from the VCD environment utilizing the vCenter-to-vCenter connection.
• Note: Residual VCD artifacts present in the HCX 9.x UI are slated for removal in a future HCX release.

Scenario 2: Migrations from VCD 10.6.x (backed by vCenter Server 8.x) to VCF Automation 9.1

• Deploy VMware HCX 9.1 on both the source and destination environments.
• Register VMware HCX 9.1 directly to the underlying vCenter Server 8.x instance, bypassing VCD.
• Migrate virtual machines from the VCD environment to a Namespace utilizing the vCenter-to-vCenter connection.
