Issue/Introduction

Automated load balancing and selection logic of VMware HCX Service Meshes during virtual machine (VM) migrations. In environments with multiple Service Meshes, HCX does not dynamically load balance migration paths automatically. Consequently, any available Service Mesh may be selected arbitrarily or repeatedly for migration tasks. This can lead to resource contention and decreased vMotion speeds if Network Extension (NE) and Mobility Interconnect (IX) appliances share the same oversaturated path.

Cause

VMware HCX does not feature native, dynamic load balancing mechanisms across deployed Service Meshes. The system selects from available Service Meshes arbitrarily, which can result in the same Service Mesh being used repeatedly for concurrent migrations.

Resolution

 

  • For automated workflows, implement custom load-balancing or selection logic directly within the automation or PowerCLI migration scripts to programmatically alternate and assign distinct Service Meshes.

  • Isolate migration infrastructure by deploying a Dedicated Service Mesh solely for Network Extension (NE) operations.

  • Deploy a separate Dedicated Service Mesh solely for Mobility Interconnect (IX) migration operations.

  • By isolating the NE and IX appliances onto separate Service Meshes, you ensure that high-volume network extension traffic does not saturate the path or impact the throughput and speed of live vMotion migrations.
