VM:Tape for z/VM

Issue/Introduction

Introduction:

Testing a TS7760 VTS and have VM:Tape interfacing with DFSMS/VM.

Some tape mounts failed resulting in message VMBTMP0667E Tape volume LX0093 has been rejected; it is part of an existing catalog.

Question:

We are testing a TS7760 VTS and have VM:Tape configured and interfacing with DFSMS/VM.

During one of our stress tests, we were running a VM:Backup job and 3 tape mounts failed with RC=100 for mounts of virtual tape volumes.

The VM:Backup console shows:    VMBACKUP 03 VMBTMP0667E Tape volume LX0093 has been rejected. It is part of an existing catalog.

What is the best way to fix the 3 tapes that experienced this error?

Environment:

IBM TS7760 Virtual Tape Server and VM:Tape interfacing with DFSMS/VM.

Answer:

Run the VMBACKUP CHECK command to map out the catalog and identify what catalog (backup) these tapes are part of.

Example: VMBACKUP CHECK ( DISK

This will map the entire catalog and put the output in a file called CATCHECK OUTPUT on the issuer's A-disk.  Once you have the output file, edit it and locate these three tapes, one by one to find the catalog or dumpjob it is part of.   From there, you can decide whether you want to keep the catalog.    VM:Backup catalogs can be managed through the screens by selecting Option 6/Manage Existing Catalogs.

Additional Information:

In this particular case, the VM:Backup catalog was old and no longer needed so the user discarded it.   After which, the tapes had to be freed up in VM:Tape which was accomplished by changing their RETPD to 0 and running VMTAPE SCRATCH.

Issue this command for each tape from a user with VMTAPE SysAdmin and ANYTAPE authorizations:

Example:  VMTAPE CATALOG VTSnnn RETPD 0 (ANYTAPE

Followed by  VMTAPE SCRATCH
