Issue/Introduction

This article describes the step-by-step procedure for performing a Storage vMotion ("Change storage only") in the vSphere Client while allocating distinct target datastores to individual virtual disks (Hard disks) and the configuration file.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Resolution

To assign individual target datastores for each virtual disk, follow these steps to configure them individually:

  1. Right-click the virtual machine in the inventory and select "Migrate...".
  2. In the select migration type screen, select "Change storage only" and click "NEXT".
  3. Upon advancing to the select storage screen, bypass the "BATCH CONFIGURE" tab and click the "CONFIGURE PER DISK" tab.
  4. From the component list, highlight the specific row of the object to customize (e.g., Hard disk 1).
  5. Click the "CONFIGURE" button located at the top of the list.
  6. In the detailed configuration window that expands, change the settings for "Target Datastore", "Virtual Disk Format", and "VM Storage Policy" as desired, then click "CONFIRM" to save the state.
  7. Verify that the "Storage" column for each component in the list correctly updates to display the intended datastore names. Ensure that there are no issues with the compatibility check, then click "NEXT".
  8. On the final confirmation screen, review that each virtual disk and configuration file maps correctly to its targeted datastore, then click "FINISH" to initiate the task.
