Issue/Introduction

Users may inquire about the ability of Tanzu Data Insights (TDI) SQL Editor or Greenplum (GP) Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers to directly connect to and query Open Metadata or Tanzu Data Lakes (TDL).

Key questions include:

  • Does the TDI SQL editor support direct connections to Open Metadata regardless of the underlying database?
  • Can the Open Metadata MCP server be installed or managed directly via the TDI controller?

Environment

  • Tanzu Data Insights (TDI)
  • VMware Tanzu Greenplum
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP)
  • Open Metadata

Resolution

Does the TDI SQL editor support direct connections to Open Metadata regardless of the underlying database?

The TDI SQL editor (AI assistant) and Greenplum MCP server currently support only Greenplum. These tools are not aware of other services.

Can the Open Metadata MCP server be installed or managed directly via the TDI controller?

The OpenMetadata MCP server is not bundled with the OpenMetadata Platform provided in the rdi-runtime releases.
Customer could deploy the MCP separately. But it is not supported by Broadcom.
