Issue/Introduction

Administrators require a procedure to import an existing brownfield vCenter Server instance into VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) to establish it as a new Workload Domain using the VCF Operations console.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0

Cause

Administrative configuration requires importing an out-of-band vCenter Server into the VCF inventory to be managed as a Workload Domain.

Resolution

  • Log in to the VCF Operations console.

  • From the VCF Operations home page, navigate to Inventory.

  • Select the Organization listed under VCF Instances.

  • Click the drop-down menu for ADD A WORKLOAD DOMAIN and select Import a vCenter.

  • Input a unique name for the new Workload Domain.

  • Select Specify an external vCenter and provide the connection details. If the vCenter is not connected to an NSX instance, un-check the corresponding option.

  • Confirm the thumbprint and acknowledge the certificate prompts.

  • Allow the automated Prechecks to kick off and complete. Review and resolve any critical warnings before resuming.

  • Fill out the authentication details for the vCenter Server instance.

  • In the Networking section, populate the required fields for an NSX Management Cluster (a new NSX instance will be deployed if the vCenter is not already connected to one).

  • Proceed to Final Validation and ensure all checks succeed.

  • Review the configuration and initiate the import workflow.

  • Monitor the progress in Tasks under Fleet Management until the Workload Domain is successfully added to your organization.
