Issue/Introduction

This article outlines the steps to change the Virtual Machine disk mode from Dependent to Independent.

Environment

  • VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x / 8.x
  • VMware vCenter Server 7.x / 8.x

Resolution

To transition a virtual disk to independent mode, follow these steps:

  1. Power off the virtual machine.
  2. Right-click the virtual machine in the vSphere inventory and select Edit Settings.
  3. Locate the affected virtual disk and expand the section to view hardware details.
  4. Select the Disk Mode dropdown and select Independent - Persistent or Independent - Nonpersistent.
  5. Click OK to save the changes to the configuration.
  6. Power on the virtual machine.

Note: The virtual machine must be in a powered-off state for the ESXi hypervisor to re-read the .vmx configuration file and apply disk mode modifications. Changes performed while the virtual machine is powered on do not take effect immediately and may lead to snapshot inconsistencies or Invalid change tracker errors.
