Issue/Introduction

  • In VMware Cloud Director Availability (VCDA) provider portal under System > Backup Archives > Scheduled Backup tasks you can see one task "generate scheduled backup archive" stuck at a given percentage and multiple tasks "generate scheduled backup archive" stuck at 0% after that.
  • The "Backup file path" field displays "Unknown" for the stuck tasks.
  • The "Hash" field shows "N/A".
  • Backups tasks are created sequentially according to the configured schedule loop.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.7.x

Cause

This issue occurs when one of the backups get's stuck due to a network disconnection, because that backup can't be finished it doesn't allow the next scheduled backups to advance but the tasks get created according to the schedule and get stuck at 0%.

Resolution

To fix this issue you can fail the backup tasks by restarting the Manager appliance.

  1. Log into the VMware Cloud Director Availability Provider portal at https://<VCDA-Manager-IP>:8443/ui/admin
  2. Navigate to System > System Health
  3. Click Reboot VM and then Reboot

After the reboot if you look at System > Backup Archives > Scheduled Backup tasks you should see all the "generate scheduled backup archive" that were stuck as failed and you should be able to launch a manual backup or wait for a scheduled one to trigger.
