Issue/Introduction

Hot expanison of a clustered vmdk of a WSFC cluster fails with: "The disk extend operation failed: The virtual disk requires a feature not supported by this program"

Environment

VMware vSAN 8.x
VMware vSAN 9.0

Cause

VMware vSAN does not support Hot Extend (online expansion) for clustered vmdks, only offline extension of a clustered VMDK is supported on vSAN on all versions below 9.0.

Resolution

Offline Extension of a clustered VMDK/vVol is supported.

This operation requires all VM nodes to be powered off. Check the kb Extension of a Clustered (shared) VMDK for the step-by-step instruction how to extend a size of a clustered VMDK

To avail of hot expand feature, upgrade to 9.1: VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1 - vSAN - New Features
