Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting a VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) lifecycle upgrade, the upgrade process fails during the initial pre-check phase.
  • The SDDC Manager user interface reports that the pre-check has failed because of the error message below :-

Failed to load NSX Cluster from the Inventory, httpStatus :, error_code : 0

  • On the SDDC manager, the error "Upgrade error occured: NSX Audit failed for <nsx_manager> Failed to load NSX Cluster from the Inventory, httpStatus : , error_code : 0" is recorded in /var/log/vmware/vcf/lcm/lcm.<date>.log-debug.

Environment

VMware NSX
VMware SDDC Manager

Cause

  • The pre-check fails because the root/admin password on one of the cluster's NSX Managers is expired
  • Because the password is expired, SDDC Manager is blocked from authenticating against that specific NSX manager node to collect inventory data, causing the entire pre-check sequence to halt.

Resolution

  • Since the password has already expired and standard SSH/UI login attempts are blocked, the password must be reset via the GRUB boot menu.
  • Follow the steps mentioned in the documentation to reset the password Resetting the Passwords of an Appliance
