Excessive messages in IXMAINT job log, before S722 abend

Issue/Introduction

I have a Disk maintenance job IXMAINT and it is generating thousands of lines and when it reached the limit of JES2 it abends with S722.

Resolution

There could be multiple reasons for excessive log messages and check the following things to fix the problem.

1. Update IXMAINT JCL to write the MSGPRINT and SYSPRINT outputs to data sets instead of writing to SPOOL.

2.  Run the IXMAINT job more frequently, so that it will have less data sets to be processed.

3. Increase JES SPOOL limit for your JCL.

4. Instead of running one IXMAINT for all the data sets, break it into multiple IXMAINT jobs. Modify the command from IXMAINT job to fetch part of the data sets in each of the IXMAINT jobs.
