Issue/Introduction

In VMware Aria Operations, when navigating to Capacity > Reclaim, the "Total Reclaimable Capacity" widget displays 0 GB for Disk Space/Storage, even though there are powered-off VMs, idle VMs, snapshots, or orphaned disks present in the environment

Environment

VMware Aria Operations 8.18.x

Cause

The user account configured for the vCenter adapter in Aria Operations lacks sufficient permissions to inventory disk usage for snapshots and powered-off/idle VMs.

When the adapter user cannot "see" the datastore details for the VMs, the object cache fails to populate storage statistics. This results in errors in the /storage/vcops/log/adapters/VMwareAdapter/VMwareAdapter_##.log similar to:

adapter.vmware.dataobject.LWVirtualMachine.getStorageStatsPerDatastore - Expecting datastore for VM vm-##, but can't find datastore in object cache

Resolution

Review and provide the collection user for the vCenter adapter with the necessary permissions to collect data regarding disk space utilization

  1. Identify the service account used for the vCenter adapter instance in Aria Operations.
  2. Log in to the vCenter Server with that specific service account.
  3. Verify if the user has permission to view datastore details for the VMs in question.
  4. Apply the required privileges as documented in the Privileges Required for Configuring a vCenter Adapter Instance section of the product documentation
  5. Wait for the next collection cycle (typically overnight for reclamation metrics) to verify that disk space values begin to populate
