Issue/Introduction

When executing the "Upgrade to service account" workflow the process fails with the following symptoms:

  • The workflow UI displays "Invalid Credentials" despite the correct vCenter Server password being provided.
  • The registration task eventually times out after several minutes.
  • In the backend logs (e.g., lcm.log or registration logs), you observe repeated authentication failure messages followed by connection timeouts.

Environment

VMware Live Cyber Recovery (VLCR) all versions.

Cause

A race condition occurs when multiple Disaster Recovery Connector (DRC) appliances are active and running in the same environment during the service account upgrade. All active DRCs simultaneously attempt to authenticate against the vCenter Server, creating an authentication retry storm that leads to resource contention, network timeouts, and potential temporary credential lockouts.

Resolution

  • Identify the redundant DRC appliances in your vSphere inventory

  • Perform a Guest OS power-off on all but one of the DRC appliances.

  • Verify that only a single, primary DRC remains in a Running state.

  • Return to the UI and re-execute the "Upgrade to service account" workflow.

  • Once the workflow has completed successfully with zero warnings, power the redundant DRC appliances back on.
