VMware vCenter Server

Issue/Introduction

vCenter Server services fail to start after the virtual machine is registered and powered on a different ESXi host following a storage failure. The vCenter Server VM has no network connectivity and is unable to communicate on its configured vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) port group.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.0.x

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0.x

Cause

The vCenter Server virtual machine's network adapter is configured to use a vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) with static port binding. The recovery ESXi host cannot allocate a new port on the vDS because the vCenter Server (which acts as the control plane for the vDS) is offline, creating an isolated network state.

Resolution

  1. Log into the ESXi Host Client of the host where the vCenter Server is currently registered.

  2. Edit the vCenter Server virtual machine settings.

  3. Reconfigure the Network Adapter to connect to a pre-existing Standard Virtual Switch (vSS) port group that has access to the management network.

  4. Verify network connectivity is restored to the vCenter Server virtual machine.

  5. Wait for all vCenter Server services to initialize and become fully available.

  6. Log into the vCenter Server vSphere Client UI.

  7. Migrate the vCenter Server virtual machine's network adapter back to the original vDS port group.
