Issue/Introduction

The following error may be found in /var/log/vmware/vmon/vmon.log and accompany service start failures.

dir-cli failed, error= An unknown option was present on the command line. 100001

This error can also be seen when attempting to create a service account with /usr/lib/vmware-vmafd/bin/dir-cli svcaccount create --name xxxxxxxx

Environment

vCenter Server 8.x

vCenter Server 9.x

Cause

The contents of /etc/likewise have been mistakenly deleted.

Resolution

Restore the vCenter server from backup.
