Issue/Introduction

  •  vSAN ESA cluster deployment via SDDC Manager fails during the migration phase of management network from vSS to vDS.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 5.x

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

VMware vSAN (All versions)

Cause

This issue occurs when there is a task in SDDC manager during deployment workflow which is trying to remove a NIC from a vSS,  if the remaining NICs on the vSS aren't able to pass the management traffic again impacting host's connectivity to vCenter.

This is a known issue and expected behaviour, If all uplinks from the vSS are trying to be moved to a vDS at the same time and the management vmkernel interface (vmk0) is not moved.

Resolution

Manually migrate the ESXi host networking to bypass the SDDC Manager automation failure and correct the out-of-sync configuration.

  • Manually Migrate Management Network: In the vCenter UI, navigate to the affected host > Configure > Virtual Switches and manually migrate the management vmkernel adapter (vmk0) from the Standard Switch to the vSphere Distributed Switch (VDS).

Migrate ESXi vmkernel/VM networking from one DVS to another DVS, or a VSS, to another VDS

  • Verify Connectivity: Verify the management connectivity as above and if host management network is UP.
  • Resume SDDC Manager task which is failed: Once the hosts are successfully connected to the VDS, return to the SDDC Manager dashboard and retry the failed task.

Additional Information

Unable to migrate or add the host into the vDS with LAG configuration - Fails with error: Network configuration change disconnected the host from vCenter server and has been rolled back
