Legacy URL Reputation filtering deprecated in Messaging Gateway

Issue/Introduction

On December 31st, 2025 the DNS based URL reputation filtering in Messaging Gateway was decommissioned and queries to the DNS block list now return a neutral status for all URLs and no longer contribute to the anti-spam filtering in Messaging Gateway. 

 

Cause

The legacy URL reputation feature has been replaced by the Webpulse URL categorization feature which is both more flexible and more effective.

Resolution

The feature will be removed from the SMG product in a future release but Broadcom support recommends that the feature be disabled in all SMG installations to reduce the number of DNS queries made by the SMG scanners.

Disable the legacy URL Reputation 

  1. Log into the Messaging Gateway Control Center as an administrator 
  2. Go to Spam > Scan Settings 
  3. Uncheck Enable URL reputation filtering
  4. Save the changes
