Issue/Introduction

In VMware NSX, the load balancer server pool status is reported as DOWN. The following error message is observed in the UI or API response: "LBPoolStatus is DOWN. Members ###.###.###.### with status 'UNUSED'".

Cause

All members of the load balancer server pool are configured as a "Backup Member". A server pool requires at least one primary member to process traffic actively; if all members are backups, the pool will fail to initialize correctly and mark members as unused.

Resolution

  1. Log in to the NSX Manager UI.

  2. Navigate to the Load Balancer configuration and select Server Pools.

  3. Edit the affected Server Pool showing the DOWN status.

  4. Locate the Pool Members configuration section.

  5. Toggle the "Backup Member" setting to "Off" for the intended primary members.

  6. Save the configuration.

  7. Verify the Server Pool status transitions back to "Success" and the error clears.
