VMware vSphere ESXi

Issue/Introduction

When searching for a specific network card driver version (e.g., version 233.0.156.0) on the Broadcom Support Portal, the exact version may not appear.

Instead, only a different or higher version (e.g., 233.0.256.0) from the same driver family is listed for download.

Environment

VMware vSphere 8.x

Cause

Under newer Broadcom and VMware packaging models, individual VMware Installation Bundle (VIB) versions are frequently wrapped inside a larger Component bundle. The version number visible on the download portal is often the Component Version, which differs from the internal Driver Version.

For example, the Component Version 233.0.256.0-1OEM contains the Driver Version 233.0.156.0-1OEM.

Resolution

To obtain the correct driver when the specific version is not explicitly listed, identify and download the corresponding Component bundle:

  1. Consult the Compatibility Guide: Check the Broadcom/VMware Compatibility Guide (HCG) for your specific hardware and ESXi version.

  2. Identify the Component Version: Look for a note in the HCG stating "Copy the component version here" or identifying the specific bundle version that includes your required driver.

   3. Download the Bundle: In the Broadcom Support Portal, search for the Component Version identified (e.g., 233.0.256.0-1OEM).
Note: For example, the Component Version 233.0.256.0-1OEM contains the Driver Version 233.0.156.0-1OEM.

   4. Verify Compatibility: Ensure the firmware on the network card is updated to a version compatible with the new driver bundle as specified in the compatibility matrix.
