Issue/Introduction

Symptoms
The vCenter Server Management Interface (VAMI) or the vSphere Client console displays the following critical warning:
"Critical update available for the current version of vCenter. Go to updates to view and apply the security update."

Environment

Current Version:** 8.0.3.00700 (Build 25092719)
Target Version:** Build 25197330 (or newer security patch)

Cause

This warning is triggered when the vCenter Server identifies that a newer security patch or minor update is available in the configured update repository. Build 25197330 contains critical security fixes for vulnerabilities identified in the 8.0 Update 3 release cycle [Security Vulnerabilities Detected on VMware vCenter Server 8.0 Update 3h](https://broadcomcms-software-agent.wolkenservicedesk.com/wolken/esd/knowledge-base-view/view-kb-article?articleNumber=429801).

Resolution

Follow these steps to prepare for and apply the security update:

1. Pre-Update Preparation
File-Based Backup:** Perform a manual file-based backup of the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) via the VAMI (`https://vcenter_fqdn:5480`). Verify that the backup completes successfully.
Virtual Machine Snapshot:** Shutdown the vCenter Server Appliance and take a powered-off snapshot. This provides the most reliable rollback point should the update fail.
Health Check:** Ensure there are no active alarms regarding disk space, particularly on the `/storage/core` and `/storage/seat` partitions.

2. Update Process via VAMI
1.  Log in to the vCenter Server Management Interface** (`https://vcenter_fqdn:5480`) as root.
2.  Navigate to the Updat* tab.
3.  Click Check Updates> Check Repository.
4.  Select the target build (e.g., 25197330) and select Stage and Install.
5.  Accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
6.  Join the VMware Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) if desired.
7.  Verify that the "I have backed up vCenter Server and its associated databases" checkbox is selected.
8.  Click Finish and monitor the progress.

3. Post-Update Verification
Log back into the VAMI and confirm the version reflects the new build number.
Verify that all services are "Healthy" and the vSphere Client is accessible.
Delete the snapshot after 24–48 hours of stable operation.
