Issue/Introduction

The Import Patch Data for Windows (PMImport) includes the Windows System Assessment Scan (WSAS) tool. This tool may fail to initialize or execute during the certificate validation phase of the WindowsPatchData.zip file. This prevents the generation of the Shavlik_applicability.xml file on client endpoints.

Symptoms

The following errors appear in the AeXNSAgent.log or STPatchAssessment.log:

  • HR=0x800710DD, MSG='Application::DoPatchAssessment()- Error initializing scanner'
  • HR=0x80004005, MSG='Utils::Xml::StringToDocument()- Couldn't load XML text'
  • Message='Patch assessment failed' (ExitCode=4).
  • Exception during assessment scan
  • Program 'Windows System Assessment Scan' completed. Exit code=-2147467260. Execution context='Administrator'. RunAs='\'
  • Error: Windows System Assessment Scan fails with Exit Code: -1
  • Operation failed: Operation aborted (-2147467260)
  • Container certificate chain is not internally valid: NotTimeValid

Environment

ITMS 8.x

Cause

This issue occurs because the embedded signing certificates within the WindowsPatchData.zip have expired, or the datafeed migration (version 7.4) requires a newer assessment engine build to validate the content.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in PMImport build 7.4.2019 and higher.

  1. Navigate to Settings > Software > Patch Management > Import Patch Data for Windows.
  2. Trigger a manual PMImport to download the latest datafeed.
  3. Verify the client receives the updated STPatchAssessment.exe (v7.4.2019+).
  4. For endpoints still failing, ensure Root Certificates are up to date to allow for proper chain validation.
