Issue/Introduction

Additional questions after reviewing the KB article Hiper PTF LU19858 required after the IBM PTFs UJ97902, UJ97903 or UJ97904.(MSG:VAM0018 UNABLE TO INSTALL IEFAB4A2 HOOK, RC= 00000020) information.

1. The above article Listed 3 PTF's from IBM. Does it matter if for example we only have 1 or 2 of the PTF's  installed. will we still have a problem?

2. message 'VAM0018 UNABLE TO INSTALL IEFAB4A2 HOOK, RC= 00000020 in the Allocate started task log.' .... if we do not get this message in the log does that mean we have no problem with SNC2 and therefore safe from this hiper.

3. IEF377I NOT CATLGD2 2 message when allocating new non-SMS non-VSAM data set. Under what condition(s), the job will end with this message ID? I can find IEF253I, IGD17001I but not IEF377I

Resolution

The answers are added to next to the questions.

1. The KB article listed 3 PTF's from IBM. Does it matter if for example we only have 1 or 2 of the PTF's  installed. will we still have a problem?

Note that there will only be one PTF related to each z/OS supported release. 

UJ97902 - z/OS 2.5
UJ97903  - z/OS 3.1
UJ97904 - z/OS 3.2

The recommendation would be to still implement the HIPER PTF  LU19858 , there is no concern adding it and it will address future updates from IBM as well.

 

2. Message 'VAM0018 UNABLE TO INSTALL IEFAB4A2 HOOK, RC= 00000020 in the Allocate started task log.' .... if we do not get this message in the log does that mean we have no problem with SNC2 and therefore safe from this hiper.

If the WTO VAM0018 is not seen in the Allocate start up, then the error should not be there.  However, it is possible some messages are being suppressed.  Validation of a successful hook can be made from looking for the following message in the JES messages for Allocate.

3. IEF377I NOT CATLGD2 2 message when allocating new non-SMS non-VSAM data set. Under what condition(s), the job will end with this message ID? I can find IEF253I, IGD17001I but not IEF377I

The message being seen is only
IEF377I VAMTB514 GENER1  777                       
        <data_set name> NOT CATLGD 2
