Issue/Introduction

Content Library synchronization for specific virtual machine templates remains in a stuck state or fails to complete. Manual attempts to delete the problematic template object fail with an error indicating that the template files are locked by the host management service (hostd).

Environment

vSphere 8.0.3

Cause

The ESXi hostd service maintains a stale exclusive lock on the template files, preventing the Content Library synchronization engine from modifying or removing the existing files.

Resolution

  • Log in to the ESXi host where the template files reside via SSH.

  • Restart the host management service by running the following command: /etc/init.d/hostd restart.

  • In the vSphere Client, navigate to the Content Library.

  • Delete the stuck VM template object.

  • Recreate the template object from the original source Virtual Machine.

  • Manually initiate a synchronization task for the Content Library or the specific template item.
