Issue/Introduction

  • The ESXi hosts are still running version 8.x
  • vSphere Lifecycle Management (vLCM) rather than vSphere Update Manager (VUM) is being used in the clusters
  • In the vSphere UI -
    • When selecting an ESXi host in an affected cluster - this red banner error is observed -

Desired image for 'domain-xxxxx' is invalid. Save the desired image and Retry.

    • The "Recent Tasks" pane contains an error -

Remediate HA - A general system error occurred: Installing HA components failed on the cluster: domain-xxxxx

    • Selecting an affected cluster and reviewing the Configure > vSphere Availability page shows -

vSphere HA is Turned On

  • The vSphere HA agent is confirmed to not be running on the ESXi host
  • A component vsphere-fdm with version 8.x was specified in the image prior to upgrading the vCenter from version 8.x to version 9.0.1.0

Environment

VCF 9.0.1.0

Cause

  • The vmware-fdm VIB is installed automatically on an ESXi host when vSphere HA is enabled on a cluster.
  • However, given that a component vsphere-fdm with version 8.x was specified in the image prior to upgrading the vCenter from version 8.x to version 9.0.1.0, the installation of the vsphere-fdm with version 9.x is being blocked.
  • This is causing vSphere HA to not function correctly
