Issue/Introduction

Disks are showing as 0MB in Edit Settings menu after losing storage connection to an ISO inserted into a VM's virtual disk drive.

If there are snapshots on the disk, you will also get this error when trying to delete them:

Environment

vSphere 8

Cause

When the datastore connection is lost or removed incorrectly, it can corrupt the disk chain and cause problems for reading the VM's disk configuration.

Resolution

To restore the disk chain, perfom these steps:

1. Power off the VM.

2. Open VM's Edit Settings menu and identify the virtual CD/DVD Drive.

3. Click the "X" to the right of the drive to remove it.  (Even if it is disconnected.)

4.  Click save.

5. If there are snapshots to be deleted, you can delete them now.

6. Power on the VM.

Now in the Edit Settings menu all the disks should be showing correctly.
