Issue/Introduction

  • When operating the RHEL 8.x virtual machine from the web console, sending a Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence resulted in a guest OS reboot.
  • The virtual machine log (vmware.log) records that the reboot was initiated by the guest OS:
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ In(05) vcpu-0 - Chipset: The guest has requested that the virtual machine be hard reset.

Environment

VMware ESXi 8.x

Cause

This is the default behavior of the RHEL 8.x operating system.

Resolution

To disable the default guest OS reboot behavior associated with the Ctrl+Alt+Del signal, please refer to the Red Hat Knowledgebase article: "How to disable Ctrl-Alt-Del in RHEL7/8/9?" (RHN login required).
For further investigation or assistance regarding this OS-level configuration,  consult the Red Hat Support or your guest OS support vendor directly.
