Users may experience a halted or stalled NSX upgrade process when executing an upgrade via VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) SDDC Manager.
The NSX upgrade gets stuck in the SDDC Manager and fails to progress further.
This specific stall occurs immediately after the NSX Edge nodes have been successfully upgraded.
VMware NSX 4.2.1.0
The upgrade halts due to a known Java Development Kit (JDK) bug that affects NSX version 4.2.1.0. When the system detects this bug, it generates a critical warning. SDDC Manager pauses the automated upgrade process as a safety precaution because it requires the administrator to manually review and acknowledge the warning.
For detailed information regarding the JDK bug and its behavior on the affected NSX versions, please refer to the official Broadcom documentation: Broadcom KB 396719.
There is currently no option to remediate or acknowledge this specific JDK warning directly from the SDDC Manager interface. To resolve the stall and complete the upgrade, you must intervene directly via the NSX UI.
Follow these steps to proceed:
Open a web browser and log in directly to the NSX Manager UI (do not use the SDDC Manager).
Navigate to the Upgrade coordinator screen.
Locate the pending warning regarding the JDK bug.
Acknowledge the warning manually within the NSX UI.
Once acknowledged, click the button to Resume the upgrade from the NSX UI.
Monitor the process in the NSX UI until the upgrade is successfully completed. Once finished, SDDC Manager will eventually sync and reflect the successful upgrade state.
