Issue/Introduction

  • VMware HCX IX Mobility Agent (MA) deployment fails during the Interconnect (IX) appliance configuration phase.
  • The task fails with the following error string: "Cannot complete a vSphere Distributed Switch operation for one or more host members"
  • You can notice below error even :
"vDS operation failed on host <host_IP>, got (vmodl.fault.invalidArgument) exception."
"The host is in a different datacenter (DC_Name) than the vCenter VDS datacenter (DC_Name).
    "

  • Review of vCenter Server logs may indicate an invalidArgument exception during the vDS operation.

  • This symptom occurs when an IX appliance attempts to interface with a vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) that is not associated with the host's Datacenter or Cluster.

Environment

VMware HCX

Cause

  • This issue occurs when an IX appliance attempts to interface with a vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) that is not associated with the host's Datacenter or Cluster.
  • When a Compute Profile includes multiple Datacenters or Clusters that do not share the same Distributed Virtual Switch (vDS), the IX appliance may attempt to attach to a vDS that is not physically or logically reachable from the cluster where the appliance is deployed.

Resolution

  1. Log in to the HCX Manager 443 UI.

  2. Navigate to Infrastructure > Interconnect > Compute Profiles.

  3. Create individual Compute Profiles for each cluster or datacenter that utilizes a unique or non-shared vDS.

  4. During the Select Clusters step of the wizard, limit the scope to only those clusters attached to the intended DVS.

  5. Create a new Service Mesh using the newly created, cluster-specific Compute Profile.
