VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) administrators investigating the upgrade process for ESXi hosts may encounter confusion regarding the management and lifecycle of NSX components (VIBs). Specifically, queries arise regarding whether a separate Transport Node upgrade activity is required for NSX VIBs on ESXi hosts in a VCF 9 environment.
VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0
In VMware Cloud Foundation 9, the legacy architecture of managing NSX VIBs independently from the core ESXi hypervisor lifecycle has been superseded. NSX VIBs get upgraded on the hosts when ESX is upgraded.
In VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0, NSX VIBs on host clusters are upgraded as part of the ESX upgrade. As a result of this change, ESX hosts no longer go into maintenance mode during an NSX upgrade. The NSX vibs stay at the same version on the host throughout any NSX upgrade, they will be updated when the ESX operating system as a whole is updated. Administrators need to plan accordingly.
