Warning: Upgrading the controller firmware can occur while the system is up and capturing traffic. No downtime will be required as long as you upgrade each controller one at a time. See the instructions below for details. Although technically online, it is best practice to schedule maintenance during low-use hours in case of unexpected issues.
Step 1: Retrieving The Firmware Update From Dell
The most recent firmware is kept by Dell in their support library. Use your Dell Service Tag and go to the Drivers and Downloads page. As of April 2026, the latest version is ME5.1.2.2.1, A11 for the controllers.
- Login to the storage array with your browser to obtain the Service Tag. It is found by hovering your mouse over the System name on the top row, center of the line.
- Check your firmware level by clicking the "Action" button on the System Page. Select Update Firmware to see the release levels and be prepared to upgrade, if necessary.
- In a new tab on your browser, go to the Dell Drivers and Downloads page.
- Enter the Service Tag of the storage array.
For the controller firmware, select Dell PowerVault ME5 Series Storage Controller Firmware ME5.1.2.2.1. As of April 2026, A11 is the most recent version. - Unzip the files
Step 2: Updating the Controller Firmware
- Log in to the Storage Manager as an admin user.
- Select the Maintenance dropdown on the left.
- Select Firmware
- Select the System tab
- Click Browse for File and select the .sfw firmware file.
- Click Upload File.
- Once you see the Firmware Upload Success message, click OK.
- In the Firmware Versions table, locate the version just uploaded and verify INSTALLED / NOT ACTIVATED is listed in the Status column.
- Click Activate this Version
- Click OK on the Warning
- Monitor the status events of the upgrade process.
- Dell estimates it will take 10-15 minutes.
