Issue/Introduction

In a DX NetOps environment integrated with Virtual Network Assurance (VNA) and Meraki, an Access Point (AP) may display a status of Initial (Unknown) in Spectrum even when the device is up and running in the Meraki dashboard. This typically occurs after a device becomes unreachable and then recovers, or when it is in an 'Alerting' state.

Environment

Virtual Network Assurance all supported versions
Spectrum all supported versions

Cause

This behavior is due to how VNA maps operational states from Meraki:

  • Online: Mapped to Up (1).
  • Offline: Mapped to Down (2).
  • Alerting/Dormant: These states (and others like 'unknown' status 12 from VNA) are mapped to Initial/Unknown (12) in Spectrum.

An Alerting state in Meraki indicates the AP is online but experiencing a non-fatal issue (e.g., PoE power issues, sub-optimal link speed, or RADIUS unreachable). Because it is not fully 'Online' or 'Offline', it defaults to the Initial state

Resolution

Once the device is 'online', it will no longer be marked as initial.
