Issue/Introduction

  • While configuring Windows Backup path in the NSX manager using newly created service accounts, the following error is encountered:
Authentication failed on fileserver sftp://IP/backup (Error Code: 29115).
  • Existing user accounts are able to successfully configure and perform backups without any issues. The newly created service accounts are able to log in successfully and do not have expired passwords or account lockouts.
  • When attempting to execute SFTP commands via the CLI using these newly created accounts, the thumbprint can be successfully retrieved; however, access to the destination fails with a permission denied error.

  • From Active Directory, the users have identical permissions and are placed in the appropriate OUs.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

The newly created users have not been added to the “AllowUsers” in the “sshd_config” file, and therefore do not have the required access permissions.

Resolution

Add the newly created users to the “AllowUsers” in the “sshd_config” file on the backup server, located at the following path: C:\ProgramData\ssh
