Issue/Introduction

VLSR fails to promote replica devices.

The following error is observed in the SRM logs or the Recent Tasks pane: Failed to promote replica devices. A general system error occurred: N2Dr3Xml20XmlValidateExceptionE empty content is not valid for content model '(((Eui64,Nguid)|Wwn|NfsName|Lun+|Eui64|Nguid|Uuid))' (1)

Environment

VMware Live Site Recovery 9.x

Cause

The error is caused by an invalid or empty identity tag in the XML response provided by the third-party Storage Replication Adapter (SRA). SRM expects a valid storage identifier (such as Eui64, WWN, or UUID) based on its XML schema, but the SRA is returning empty content for a managed LUN or device.

Resolution

  • Verify the storage array configuration to ensure all replicated LUNs and devices have valid, standardized identifiers (WWN/UUID) without unsupported special characters.

  • Collect the SRA logs from the SRM server.

  • Engage the specific Storage Array and SRA vendor support team to analyze the discoverDevices or prepareFailover XML output and correct the adapter logic. This issue originates outside of VMware software.
