Issue/Introduction

When a user attempts to create a Timebox (Iteration or Release) in Rally and selects the option to cascade the timebox down to both Parent & child projects, the operation fails with the following error message:Error "Batch Operation Failed"

Environment

Rally SAAS

Cause

This issue typically occurs when a user is working within a child project and attempts to use the "Cascade" feature while also selecting the parent project scope. Specifically, there are two common reasons for this behavior:

  1. Incorrect Hierarchy Selection: The Cascade feature is designed strictly to push new timeboxes down into child projects. It cannot create new timeboxes upward into a parent project. If you are in a child project and have the "Parent Projects" filter checked, the cascade action will fail.

  2. Insufficient Permissions: If a user is attempting to create a timebox that impacts a parent project, the action will fail if their account does not hold the necessary Editor or Project Admin permissions for that specific parent project.

Resolution

Option 1: Adjust your Hierarchy Settings (Most Common) - If you are intentionally creating the Iteration or Release from a child project and cascade down to sub-projects:

  • Open Plan and click on Timeboxes
  • Now create a new Iteration or Release.

  • Locate your project scope settings (the project tree or scope toggles) and set project.

  • Ensure that the checkbox for Cascade is enabled for the timebox.

  • Uncheck the option to include Parent Projects. (Only)

  • Save the timebox. It will now successfully cascade down to the nested child projects.

Option 2: Verify User Permissions If your goal is to create a timebox for the Parent project and have it cascade down to all associated child projects, you must create the timebox from the Parent project level itself.

  • If you are unable to switch to the Parent project or save a timebox there, you likely lack the required permissions.

  • Please reach out to your Workspace Administrator to request Editor access for the Parent project. Once granted, you can navigate to the Parent project, enable "Cascade," and create the timebox for the entire hierarchy.
