DX Unified Infrastructure Management (Nimsoft / UIM)

Issue/Introduction

Users may want to receive an alarm in DX Unified Infrastructure Management (UIM) whenever a new Virtual Machine (VM) is created within a managed vCenter environment.

Environment

  • Product: DX Unified Infrastructure Management (UIM)
  • Probe: VMware (vmware)
  • Version: 8.10 /8.20 /8.30

Cause

While VMware vCenter generates informational events (e.g., vim.event.VmCreatedEvent) when a VM is created, the VMware probe is not currently configured to map these specific events to UIM alarms.

Key Technical Constraints:

  • Event Volume: Creating a single virtual machine can generate approximately five informational events. Mapping all such events to alarms would significantly increase noise and impact system performance. Therefore, as a best practice, informational events from ESX servers are not used to generate alarms.
  • Mapping Limitations: Ideally, this could be handled by mapping specific events using their Event Type ID (e.g., vim.event.VmCreatedEvent) instead of using a general event type. This would allow for more precise filtering.
  • Probe Functionality: The VMware probe does not currently support mapping based on Event Type ID, so this level of granular filtering is not possible in the current versions.

Resolution

Currently, there is no out-of-the-box configuration in the VMware probe to trigger an alarm specifically for the creation of a new VM based on vCenter event IDs.

Workaround / Recommended Action

If this functionality is required for your operations, please submit an Enhancement Request (Idea) via the Broadcom Support Portal. This allows our Product Management team to track the demand for this feature and consider it for future probe releases.

  1. Log in to the  Broadcom Support Portal
  2. Navigate to the Communities section for DX Infrastructure Management.
  3. Click on Ideation to submit your request.
