Supported Principal Storage Migration Paths for Management Domains in VCF 9.1

Issue/Introduction

User attempts to change Management Domain principal storage from NFSv3 to Fibre Channel (FC) using SDDC Manager workflows.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1

Cause

VCF 9.x SDDC Manager workflows for principal storage migration are currently limited to homogeneous (like-to-like) transitions.

Resolution

In VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1, the following storage migration behaviors apply:

 

• Supported Homogeneous Changes: NFSv3 to NFSv3, and VMFS FC to VMFS FC.
• Supported Heterogeneous Changes: vVol to vSAN is the only supported cross-type migration in the SDDC Manager workflow.
• Unsupported Changes: Migration from NFSv3 to VMFS FC is not supported.

 

There is no automated "Day-N" workflow to transition a Management Domain from NFS to FC. If FC is required as principal storage, it must be selected during the initial deployment (Greenfield).
