When creating the ESA agent installation package for Cloud SWG in Enterprise Console there is an option to change the Version Selection between Latest Channel and Previous Channel. What is the difference is between these two.
This setting essentially controls the version of the agent software bundled into your installation package:
* Latest Channel: This option selects the most recent version of the ESA agent. In most standard configurations, this is the current Generally Available (GA) release. However, if you have enabled "Use the Symantec LiveUpdate server for pre-released content" in your policy settings, this channel may include newer builds intended for testing upcoming operating system compatibility (like Windows Insider or macOS beta builds).
* Previous Channel: This provides access to the version immediately preceding the current "Latest" version (often referred to as the n-1 version). This is useful for organizations that prefer to stay one version behind for maximum stability or if a specific compatibility issue was identified in the newest release.
For production environments, the "Latest Channel" is typically recommended to ensure you have the latest security updates and OS support. If you plan to test newer versions before a broad rollout, we recommend creating a dedicated test policy for a small group of devices.
To manage these settings effectively, please consider the following:
1. Review your Live Update Server settings under Agent Management -> Policies to see if pre-release content is enabled.
2. Create a Dedicated Test Policy for evaluating "Latest Channel" agents before deploying them to your entire fleet.
3. Use the Device Groups functionality to target specific test machines for different channel versions.
