Issue/Introduction

  • Server hangs at "Initializing Firmware Interfaces".
  • iDRAC reports POST code 0x58.
  • iDRAC Status shows "Preparing to boot".
  • System boots normally if storage SAS cables are disconnected from the sensor.

Environment

Dell R640 server
Dell ME4 storage
Dell ME5 storage

Cause

The Dell storage arrays are cabled incorrectly. If the server detects the SAS cable is plugged into the Expansion port instead of one of the four data ports, the sensor will not boot. On the Dell ME4 storage array controllers, the expansion port is highlighted by a blue box.  The data ports are highlighted by a purple box.

On the Dell ME5 storage arrays, the data ports are enclosed in a light gray box whereas the expansion port is isolated right next to the Ethernet management port.

Resolution

Consult the Security Analytics Gen8 Hardware Configuration Guide and make sure that the SAS cables are connected to the correct ports on the storage array.  A full power cycle or cold boot may be required for the HBA to re-initialize and "clear" the POST hang after the cables are moved.

Additional Information

NOTE that even if the system boots, SAS cabling issues will cause configuration script failures.
