Issue/Introduction

The SDDC Manager workflow to deploy a new workload domain fails at the step to deploy the vCenter Server appliance with an error from the VCSA installer stating the target path is invalid. The error can be seen from the VCSA installer logs located in the SDDC Manager where the error would look like:

vCSACliInstallLogger - DEBUG - Task 'Running precheck: HostConfigs' execution failed because [The path provided in the target setting in section new_vcsa, subsection vc does not exist. Check the value of the target setting in the JSON file provided to the installer. ], possible resolution is [Refer to the logs for details]

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 5.x
VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0.x
VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1

Resolution

  1. Login to the management vCenter Server.
  2. Locate the datacenter where the management VMs are located. This datacenter would have been created when the management domain was deployed.
  3. Temporarily move the datacenter to the top level so it is not nested inside a folder. Please note that a rename of a folder could be required if a naming conflict would occur.
  4. Restart the failed workload domain creation.
  5. Once the workload domain is created, if needed, move back the datacenter back inside a folder.
