VMware Usage Meter

Issue/Introduction

After deploying VCF Usage Meter 9.0.x, users may find that there is no field or option in the user interface (UI) to enter a license key. The official documentation also lacks procedures for license application to the appliance itself.

Environment

VCF Usage Meter 9.0.x

Cause

VCF Usage Meter is designed as a free metering and reporting tool that does not require an individual product license key for its operation.

Resolution

VCF Usage Meter is a free management virtual appliance designed to measure and report the consumption of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) components. Based on the product's design and specifications, manual license application is not required for the following reasons:

  • Appliance Licensing Model: Usage Meter is a metering and reporting tool. It is provided as a free appliance, and there is no paid licensing model or individual serial key associated with the appliance itself.

  • Configuration Focus: The configuration required by the user is not to license the Usage Meter itself, but to register the product instances to be metered (such as vCenter Server, NSX, Aria Suite Lifecycle, etc.) within the appliance.

  • Activation via Business Service Console: While a license key is not used, the appliance is activated during the initial setup by registering its UUID and applying an Access Token from the VCF Business Services Console (BSC).
